Thirty-five years ago José (Chema) Soto looked around his dilapidated and burned-down Bronx block and decided to bring some brightness to it.His first two efforts to build a casita - a small wooden house like the ones once popular in rural Puerto Rico - on an empty lot were burned down. But the third stuck."I was inspired by the casita where I was born, the house of my grandmother, Do?a Angela Clemente, at 457 Espa?a St. in Hato Rey," said Soto, 65, referring to a neighborhood of San Juan.Today, La Casita de Chema, officially known as the Centro Cultural Rincón Criollo, on Brook Ave. at 157th St., is  Monsters Beats Dr Dre one of the oldest casitas in the city with a thriving community garden and  Cheapest Beats By Dre Headphones a legendary music scene."It was the first in the Bronx," said Soto. "From there everyone started making casitas."His house was the centerpiece of the iconic exhibition "Las Casitas: An Urban Cultural Alternative" that opened at the Smithsonian Institution in 1991 and closed later that year at the Bronx Museum of Art.An update on that exhibition to mark its 20th anniversary opens today at the Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College in the Bronx.On display through Dec. 11, "Las Casitas Revisited" includes elements of the original exhibit as well as photos and videos about La Casita de Chema. A new casita has been built for this show.For two generations, La Casita de Chema has been a breeding ground for   Puerto Rican musicians. A plenero himself, Soto, invited artists to perform and opened the space for community members to practice and share in the music."I never thought when I started Rincón Criollo that it would rise so much," Soto said. "That I would have there Iris Chacón, Tito Puente, Yomo Toro and Tego Calderón."
